Artist Statement
My work is based on landscapes as spiritual places. In my practice, I use historical processes, infrared photography, composites, and abstraction. Growing up, I spent a lot of time outdoors, and I got my first camera when I was 13 years old. I began taking photos on family camping trips, that branched into multiple mediums focusing on landscape. I use the historical process cyanotype in my work for its vivid colors and its scientific aspect. It was originally used to document plant life before it was used as an expressive photographic medium.
I also do infrared photography from that same camera I got when I was 13. I modified it by taking off the infrared blocking filter so it could see the full spectrum of light. I chose infrared because it had a historical impact on the landscape. It was originally used as an aerial film for the military because it only picked up leaves that were still alive. I'm using it as a way to study the landscape and how its changing. I hope my work adds to the conversation about societies impact on nature.
